Two books I recommend are: Tenured Bosses and Disposable Teachers: Writing Instruction in the Managed University and University, Inc.: The Corporate Corruption of American Higher Education. Comparing the impact of capitalism on universities in France and the US is and intriguing project. I fear that because our university sector is so privatized to begin with that capital has had an even easier time here! And only a small sector of our faculty are unionized--CUNY in fact has one of the strongest faculty unions in the country, as you probably know. We're poorly paid, but probably not nearly as poorly as you are, I imagine. But at least you all have some social and cultural prestige, no? In the US, we don't even have very much of that....
